Dandy Warhols News and Rumors Archive - February 2003

March 31, 2003 - 2 versions of Monkey House, part 2; We Used To Be Friends video link
Got word that the Filter article that came out a while ago, it contains what I guess you could call a confirmation to their being two versions coming out.

Was going to post this the other day, but just didn't get around to it... but if you want to watch the We Used To Be Friends video without wasting your time on the whole page loading (or download it for your own personal pleasure), go to DELETED BY REQUEST.

Update: The direct link to the video was removed by request. You can still access it through the webpage addy at http://www.dandywarhols.com/video/used2bfriends.html

March 29, 2003 - 2 versions of Monkey House?
Rastageoff, on Dandysrule2, reprinted a quote found on an industry website (not sure which one. I couldn't find it):

The Capitol version of Welcome To The Monkey House, mixed by Jeremy Wheatley, is set for a July release in the States. There is probably going to be an "indy" version of the album, mixed by Russell "The Dragon" Elevado, released late Summer/Fall on a small label. The "Dragon" version is very different, much more laid back, way more of a stoner keyboards album; the Wheatley version is totally pumped- up, more guitar-based album. Both are great if you're a Dandy fan, and I think this may be the one to break them to the masses. I know Capitol is really behind this one, so we'll see..."

No confirmation yet about this.

March 29, 2003 - We Used To Be Friends video on official site
Over at the official site, they have put up the video for We Used To Be Friends. Pretty cool stuff, in my opinion. To go to the video:
http://www.dandywarhols.com/video/used2bfriends.html

It also, as reported before, contains many pics of Courtneys mohawk. And while I haven't looked overly closely at it, I did see myself in the video twice.

March 27, 2003 - U.S. release date confirmed
Well... unofficially confirmed. Until the official site says it is the date, it isn't official. But, I'd bet my life on this date, as it came from DW management themselves:

July 22

March 27, 2003 - articles
Three new articles have been posted to the Article Menu. Two are in Norweigan and will be translated in the coming week or so and one is from Billboard Magazine. Of note in the Billboard article, they "confirm" the U.S. release date is what has been speculated at Slabtown, with it being released July 22nd.

But, on an interesting note, Capitol Records homepage hollywoodandvine.com reports it being released on May 20th. I'm working to confirm which of the dates might be correct and will have more info later today/tomorrow.

March 26, 2003 - ebay fun
It was inevitable, but to be honest, I'm surprised that it took this long. Promo copies of both the full album and the first single have been up for auction on eBay in the past 24 hours (both have been bought already). But, they are sure to not be the last. For your perusal, here are photos of the covers, that accompanied the auctions:
Welcome To The Monkey House

We Used To Be Friends

If you want to find future auction items on ebay, you will have to do it yourself, as I don't have any plans on keeping track of the items on this site.

March 25, 2003 - We Used To Be Friends streaming
Since I haven't gone to the official messageboards in the past few days (I tend to avoid it when Gothman is pissing me off), I didn't see this myself, but I was emailed a link posted on it. To hear a good quality clip (30 seconds or so) of We Used To Be Friends, go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/presenters/andrew_collins/roundtable.shtml and look for the link on the left-hand side under "Listen Again". Or, for a more direct link, just go to http:www.bbc.co.uk/6music/ram/rt_dandy.ram.

Thanks to Brandon for the heads-up.

Update
If you click on "Listen To The Latest Roundtable here!" link, and then forward to 16:27:15 or so (timewise), a much larger section of the song is played (about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes). Thats what I get for not listening to the whole hour show. I'll update later with the "reviews" that were on the same recording.

March 25, 2003 - The Dope = Wonderful You
Stian, in Norway, writes in to mention that in an interview on Norweigan radio, the band announced that as a last-minute change, the track called "The Dope" was changed to "Wondeful You." The track was also played on the station. I looked at their website to see if it was available anyplace on it, but I don't see it yet.

I'll update the rest of the site for the name change when I get more verification.

March 24, 2003
Just wanted to mention quickly that I won't be publishing songs from the new album anymore, regardless of where else they appear. I'll supply links to where you can get them, but not downloads of the tracks. I got a bit overzealous and excited over the new songs, and wanting people to hear the new tracks, so they could get an idea of what some of the songs are like, and I forgot a promise I made to myself not to do what I did. So, no more tracks posted on the site, but I will let you know where you can find them.

Also, the lyrics for the album won't be posted anymore until the album is released commercially. The major reason for this is copyright reasons: If you look at the sections for any other songs, you will see that they have a "legal" section, where I give the copyright credit for each track. Since the new tracks don't have any copyrights available to me (beyond ©2003 and Written By Courtney Taylor-Taylor), it is higly irresponsible of me to post the lyrics. But full lyrics for the new album should appear the day the album is released, so no worries in that regard.

March 23, 2003 removed
All lyrics for the new album have been removed for the time being.

March 23, 2003 Luxembourg show is happening, but...
...it is on May 29th and not June 29th. Yesterday, I mentioned reports about a show in Lux happening on June 29th and I said it sounded pretty late to be part of the DW Europe tour. Now, just a few minutes ago, I got information about the show and as this updated started out with, it is happening on May 29th. Info on the Upcoming Concerts page. Damn, there's been a lot of those updates lately.

March 23, 2003 Xfm Radio
I got word of this about a week ago, but forgot it until reminded on Dandysrule2.

Courtney will be doing an interview on Xfm radio, in the U.K., on May 7th. The station has a live feed on their website (xfm.co.uk). Will try to remember it and mention it as it comes closer.

March 23, 2003 Three new German shows
Thanks to Ralf for bringing three new German shows to my attention:
June 2 - Munich, at Muffathalle
June 4 - Berlin, at Casino
June 10 - Hamburg, at Grosse Freiheit 36

Ticket information for all shows are on the Upcoming Concerts page.

March 23, 2003 I Am A Scientist lyrics added
Added lyrics for I Am A Scientist. Write in if you feel any are not right.

March 22, 2003 - Good Japanese pre-order price and UK single pre-orders.
Got an email with some cool information about pre-orders:
"fyi, siren disc (www.sirendisc.com) is selling the japanese import for $27.99 and the single 'used to be friends' on cd & 7" for $8.69 and $6.95, respectively. they have the release dates listed as april 28th for japanese album and may 5th for uk singles."

That is the best price I've seen for the Japanese import and the first pre-orders I've seen for the 7" singles. Very cool indeed. I've already got mine ordered.

March 22, 2003 - another show added?
Seb, on Dandysrule2, mentions that the band will be playing in Luxembourgh on June 29 at a place called "L'Atelier". I've been trying to find more information, but the only place I can find with that name in Luxembourgh is a dramatic improv group, so I don't know if this is legit or not. Also, June 29 is like 2 weeks after any previously reported dates in Europe, and might be too close to the July release date of Monkey House in the states, where they will be touring to support its release. More info as I get it.

March 22, 2003 - new download
For the second week in a row, Nic Harcourt has played a new DW track on his Sounds Electic radio show. This time it is I Am A Scientist. For the time being, you can download it at:
Scientist.mp3

Once I am asked to remove it, don't forget that it will still be available on the Sounds Eclectic website, at http://soundseclectic.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=sc&air_date=3/23/03&tmplt_type=show

I will be updating this page for the song later tomorrow. I already have the lyrics all figured out, but I just don't feel like taking the time to type them up right now. As for my opinion of the song, it is one that I really like, but I think it will really divide people on how they feel about the album overall. Very 80's.

March 18, 2003 - ticket info for Pinkpop
Added a link on the Upcoming Concerts page for tickets to the Pinkpop festival. Or at least I attempted to. If the direct link doesn't work, you will have to do a search for the tickets yourself on the site that is selling them, Ticketservice.nl, where a simple search for pinkpop will pull up the info.

March 18, 2003 - ticket info for Halles show
Finally found a link to purchase tickets to the May 26 show in Belgium. Info on the Upcoming Concerts page.

Fuck Bush.

March 17, 2003 - French show added
A new show has been added to the European tour, this one is on May 28th in Paris, France. Check out the Upcoming Concerts page for more information, including ticket purchasing.

Thanks to Pierre on Dandysrule2 for mentioning this and Marquis for supplying info on purchasing tickets.

March 13, 2003 - Monkey House bio;Oz release date confirmed
As is the tradition with each new album the band comes out with, a new bio of the band has been written, this time by Courtney, who is interviewed by himself. Read it here. Nothing really groundbreaking, but a fun read. Also, its signed Courtney Taylor-Taylor again. Ugh.

Put another assumption under the category as "confirmed," when Lisa on Dandysrule2 posted an article that basically said that all the prior international release dates were true for Australia as well. This means that the album comes out May 19th and that We Used To Be Friends comes out May 5th.

March 12, 2003 - three new pictures
I first saw these about a week ago, on the official website for the Hultsfred Festival, and at first just figured that they were nothing more than pictures made by the people at the Hultsfred website, since they seem a bit silly. But, out of curiosity, I talked to a couple of people and found out that they are legit promo pics of the band. Click on a picture below for a full-sized version of the picture.

March 11, 2003 - cover finally "officially released"
OK, now I can post it again, the cover art for Welcome To The Monkey House, as it has now been posted on the official site (in the news section, but currently not mentioned on the front page):

As you can see, it is the Zippered Banana, which is a cross between the banana cover used for The Velvet Underground's "Velvet Underground & Nico" album and the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers" album. Both original album art was by Andy Warhol. No word on who did the Zippered Banana.

Yes, this is the same art that was posted in the Monkey House news section in early February, and the same art that has appeared on stickers from the band for almost a year now (I first heard of the art on stickers in an email on May 26th, 2002). The art also appears on the bass drums that Brent uses in the Used To Be Friends video and presumably on their next tour.

Thanks to Brandon for telling me it was in there. I had been to the front page earlier today, but not in the news section itself.

March 11, 2003 - More Norway news;Plan A download, lyrics
To those who were following along the news on the Monkey House update page about Norway radio playing The Last High a few weeks ago, I got an update on it. But first, a quick recap for people who didn't see it before: A month ago (Feb 11th), a Norwegien radio station started playing a copy of The Last High, and it climbed up to #22 on their B - Spilleliste chart. (Update done. Told you it would be quick) I got word just a bit ago that it has now gone to their A - Spilleliste chart. Apparently the difference is that now it is played twice as much as before, and is in the rotation with all the top songs (Pink, Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Linkin Park, etc etc). Pretty cool stuff. If you are interested, you can read it yourself.

A quick follow-up to the Plan A download situation, of sorts. Some people have reported that the link that I mentioned yesterday, that linked to the Sound Eclectic homepage didn't work. I just tried it again and it is still working for me, so I am not sure what is up. One problem might be that, I noticed that the full address didn't fit on one line. If the full link takes up more than one line on your browser, and you are cut and pasting the address, rather than clicking on the link, then make sure that you get the full address.

And last but not least, I have 99% of the lyrics for Plan A done, and will be putting them up soon. I've just been in a lazy mood again. They are currently sitting in my living room, with only one word left for me to figure out.

March 10, 2003 - Plan A
Plan A Pulled by request.

You can still download it at the original radio source:
http://soundseclectic.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=sc&air_date=3/2/03&guest_name=Iron+&+Wine&tmplt_type=show

It is on hour 1, and starts about 6 minutes into the audio feed.

March 9, 2003 - Plan A
Radio Station KCRW's "Sound Eclectic" show played Plan A yesterday, and thanks to its homepage, made the feed available online. So, being the nice bastard that I am, I made a copy for you guys:
Plan A
Thanks to Wildman for mentioning it on Dandysrule2.

Lyrics will probably be up later today. It doesn't appear to be too hard of a song.

March 8, 2003 - Monkey House review.
The first Monkeyhouse review has been posted on the site.

On a related note, the Monkeyhouse info page will no longer be active, as all new MH news will be posted here. It is enough past the speculation stage about a lot of the album, so most of it can just be said on the regular news page.

March 7, 2003 - 4 new euro concert dates.
As I mentioned earlier today, I found more concerts listed at the official page. They have been added to my site now. The complete run-down of the 6 new shows is:
May 26 - Brussels, Belgium. (Tickets not on sale yet)
June 6 - Nurburging, Germany - Rock Am Ring festival. MTV sponsered.
June 7 - Nurenberg, Germany - Rock Im Park festival. MTV sponsered.
June 8 - Landgraaf, Netherlands - PinkPop Festival. This is the bands second appearance at the festival, but first in 5 years.
June 12 - Oslo Norway - Norweigan Wood Festival
June 13 - Hultsfred, Sweden - Hultsfred Festival

More information, including ticket purchasing, is on the Upcoming Concert page.

March 7, 2003 - 2 new euro concert dates.
The band has reportedly been signed to play at two German festivals sponsered by MTV on June 6-7. June 6th will be in Nurburging and June 7th will be in Nuremberg. Both days, they are playing on the "Alternastage" with the following bands (from opener to headliner): Blackmail, Die Happy, Dandy Warhols, The Hives, Silverchair and SUM 41. Links to buy tickets on the Upcoming Concerts page.

UPDATE - Right after posting the new concert info, I checked out the official site, which lists an additional 4 concerts the band has signed on for. I'm in the middle of updating the concert page to include those, but right now I have something else to take care of, so it will be delayed.

March 4, 2003 - Editorial on video shoot for We Used To Be Friends;lyrics;download
Added an editoral/commentary about being at the video shoot for We Used To Be Friends
. In related items, I wrote up a partial set of lyrics for the track. And, last but not least, I got ahold of a very, very rough recording from the video shoot. It is hard to make out most of the song, but you can get an idea for how it sounds.
