at Glastonbury Festival - Pyramid Stage
By Ian davies
The worst job at the festival must be the man who has to drag the Dandy Warhols out of bed in time for their 3pm appointment with the pyramid stage. They look as if they've only just gone to bed, and the lazy start of 'Be-In' and 'Shakin' would seem to prove it. Lead singer Courtney hasn't even had time to shave. In fact, it seems he that hasn't found time for quite a while - he is sporting a beard. Must be the Glastonbury spirit.
Soon though, they get into the swing of things. The all encompassing glory of 'Junkie… is accompanied by video clips of semi-naked girls frolicking in the shower, and Courtney thanks the crowd "for getting up for us."
Then the moment that sends lawyers working for corporate sponsors Orange scrambling for Michael Eavis' phone number. The Dandy Warhols play the one tune that everyone knows; 'Bohemian Like You', aka that Vodafone song.
Zia, the notoriously exhibitionist keyboard player, contents herself with smoking, shaking the maracas, and, during the lazy 'Country Leaver', the harmonica. Meanwhile guitarist Peter throws all manner of guitar shapes and hides behind his fringe.
Halfway through 'Solid', "I must have a door in the back of my head", and Courtney stops. He's hearing voices in his head, and even at this epitome of debauched living, he feels the need to ask: "Do you know what flashbacks are? Do you guys have acid over here?"
And then, it seems almost as soon as it began, it's 'Hard on for Jesus', 'Boys Better' and they're gone. Well, almost. After tumultuous applause from the afternoon crowd, Courtney stumbles back on stage, cigarette hanging from his lips.
Before encoring with an acoustic 'Every Day Should Be A Holiday', he drawls: "Can I do this with a cigarette in my mouth? That's f-ing classy", and he's right. The Dandy Warhols are f-ing classy.
