It'd be easy to label the Dandy Warhols as pretentious, if they weren't so damn fun. Their boho world may be all about good spliffs, mind-blowing sex, thrift shop chick and art-school attitude, but their musicianship raises them above the '60s-'70s-style hedonism they like to project. Still, the D.W.'s rep as retro rockers with a superiority complex is kinda their own fault; after all, naming themselves after a famous pop artist and singing a song about which drugs are in vogue, "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth" (the one with the memorable chorus, "Heroin is so passe"), aren't exactly subdued statements. With their soon-to-be-released Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia (Capitol), the Dandys continue to churn out buoyant, beautiful melodies with clever, know-it-all lyrics, but many of the tunes are tinted with unexpected influences, too - a little bit of country with their rock & roll, a bunch o' psychedelia, and some ethereal-feeling harmonies that are as sweet and stony as the band's favorite vice. See 'em live and you may have a new addiction.
