July 28th, the Dandy Warhols played a short-noticed (well, about 10 days) show to warm up for their opening slots for the Rolling Stones and Nine Inch Nails in a few weeks.
A quick disclaimer: I was in a very, very bad mood before and after the show, for reasons not worth mentioning. This affected my opinion of the show. This is apparent in that, everyone else at the show I've talked to said it was another great show.
Since the band has been on such a roll, I wasn't sure if they could do it again. The Geezers show was, to me, monumental, and it really made the band have a lot to strive to. In my opinion, the latest show was really really good, but not on the same level as Geezers. I think it was because there was a distinct lack of the older material that made Geezers feel like a 1996-era show. The last show, they played I think 6 songs that were from DROK or before. The latest show? 1 song, though it was the rare Lou Weed.
Here is the setlist, as written down before the show (Thanks to Sorababe for snagging it):
Be-In
UTBF
Junkie
Talk Radio
You Love Me
Burned
Money
Mission Control
Last High
I Love You
Edmund Fitzgerald
Get Off
Horse Pills
Godless
Trucker (new tune on new album)
New New (The slow version of New Country)
Wasp
Boho
PIA>>Boys
Lou Weed
Country Leaver
OK, so officially, that is what was gonna be played. And, they did play all of that, to my recollection, except maybe Edmund Fitz. I don't recall that. Additionally, they did play Your Ghost and, the next day after the show, I was sure they played Holding Me Up and Shakin'. Looking back, I am not so sure anymore, either way.
Apparently, the backstory on Trucker is this (but it may be wrong, due to the influence of.... influences): Years ago, in the Hedford era, the band was driving to a gig and their van broke down. They got picked up by a trucker who was on meth. Scary type of dude. Courtney had to sit up front and deal with Scaryguy, so he turned it into a song. A pretty cool song, at that.
Anyway, so, the bands show was a success by anyones account (how much of a success depends on who you ask, with me being in the minority and thought it was "only" very very good) and they sure sounded like they are ready for some feisty European crowds. Though, I hope the NIN fans don't crucify them.
