Hotel Eden
|
There has always been interest in side-projects of the band, and none of them have ever become as developed as Peter Holmstroms "Hotel Eden". But, until recently, it was more a thing of legend rather then a commonly talked about piece. Thanks to some information sent to me, along with postings on dandywarhols.com, information on this side project is finally fleshing out.
Sorry for the wording on this. I will make it more clear later on.
The CD was created using ProTools DIGI001 in 2000, Peter on guitar, several effects (no surprise, considering Peters effects pedals), and help from the Begat Theater Compagnie. It was created during a two week peroid in the "killing room" at the Abattoir in Chalon sur Soane, France.
The track listing, according to Peters section of Dandywarhols.com is:
Panic
Open E
Don't Panic
Nalda
George
Tambora
As for the play itself, the original street theater piece, Hotel Eden, was created by Peters sister (Karin) and the Begat Theater Compaigne. The play was performed several times during the summer of 2001, in Europe. The play was based on "Nalda Said," which is a book by Stuart David, from the bands Belle & Sebastian and Looper.
A vague description from the Begat website:
"An intimate theatrical show for the street. Inspiration : Nalda said, from Stuart David. Original music : Peter Holmström (The Dandy Wahrols), USA. Co-realisation : L'Abattoir de Chalon-sur-Saône. Cerated in Chalon-sur-Saône and Dubrovnik (Croatia). On tour in France, Switzerland, Croatia, Nederland and Czech Republic."
Long Description from website:
A modern fairy tale on a circular labyrinth
The audience is invited inside T.'s head - he is enclosed within a circular world, with no way out. T., a mistrustful, naïf and solitary character; an endearing individual who finds himself alone in a world that surpasses him. Raised in seclusion, nourished by the tales and prejudices of his Aunt Nalda, he lives with his memories and his illusions of a better world. He attaches himself to what actually imprisons him, the things that keep him from living what he dreams of, an "ordinary" life.
THE SHOW IS EVERYWHERE
"The audience's gaze follows the thread of the action woven like a cloth all over the circular expanse" (excerpt from the newspaper Coulisses, Aurillac, 23/08/2001).
The spectators enter the arena and find themselves in the heart of the action. Eight characters evolve in the center both on paths that are traced within the audience and all around on raised stages. The spectator chooses his place freely. The show is everywhere, in the audience and all around, inciting the spectators to be active, turning to choose their point of view. The characters of the story encircle the audience members, brush against them, cross through them. The center of action changes perpetually. The acting space and the audience space mix and join.
Creation 2001
Inspired by Stuart David's book "Nalda said" (UK)
Created in L'Abattoir (Chalon-sur-Saône) and Lazareti (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
Co-production : Abattoir, the town of La Penne sur Huveaune & Art Workshop Lazareti
Funding and support : DRAC PACA, Parc Régional de Matériel PACA, ADAMI
BETWEEN SPECTACULAR AND INTIMATE, REAL AND DREAMED
"The atmosphere oscillates from peacefulness to euphoria, as the characters seem to pass from stillness to insanity. The ghostly images of the actors dressed in white parade to the rhythm of the circles that they accomplish while running… a souvenir of extreme beauty." (excerpt from the newspaper Journal dans la Rue, Chalon sur Saône, 21-07-2001).
Everything is visible. The characters stand out by the whiteness of their clothing. They seem to slide through the compact crowd under the warmth of the stage lights. The shadows of the characters and the set structures, stripped-down metallic trees, are cast onto the nearby buildings, opening the space, creating a monumental scenography in movement. The original soundscape created by Peter Holmström translates the vision of T.'s tormented world, made up of pulsations and silences, a subtle mix of existing noises and original sounds.

"As in a planetarium, sitting under the stars, Begat Theater brings us into a magical world. A circular world, swarming with beings, with light, overtaken by the spellbinding sonorities that are intimately mixed with the movements of T's world, a scrawny and endearing character, secretive and captivating… A backward Little Prince….
Using an original conception of choreography and set design, the show immerses the audience in the heart of the action, displacing perpetually the center. As T. runs away from his story, the characters (that include the audience) harass him from all corners of the labyrinth. The audience's gaze follows the thread of the action woven like a cloth all over the circular expanse, creating as a result an intimate atmosphere in a moving stage design… a striking show that has attracted a lot of attention."(excerpt from the newspaper Coulisses, Aurillac, 23-08-2001) -
