Dig!

What Is Dig!?
Dig! is a movie that traces basically the history of the Dandy warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre for a 7 year span (1996-2003, from before the warhols were signed with Capitol up through the release of Welcome To The Monkey Hose), through the eyes of director/producer/editor Ondi Timoner. Ondi had pretty much all-access to the band during those days and compiled some 1500 hours of footage. Most of the scenes show Courtney and Anton, either together or separately, as the Warhols achieve 'fame' and Anton and his jolly bunch of Massacrers wallow in cultdom and mediocrity, with Anton growing to "envy and mock the Dandys' success while undergoing a nonstop slide into self-destruction and bizarre, dangerous behavior."

How Did It Start?
It was original conceived to be a TV series called "The Cut," which would focus on unsigned bands who were trying to make it. The idea was pitched to MTV and the channel agreed to develop it. Then it got 'corporate', as Ondi described it as:
"But then they had a lot of, like we couldn't show cigarettes. Eventually, the people at MTV stopped responding to the project and came out with their own series called 'The Cut,' which was the kind of talent show you would expect from MTV."
Following this, she decided to only focus on Anton and Courtney, due to their charisma and lack of desire to play it safe because it was on TV.

I Heard It Won Awards...
This is true. It won what is probably the second-most prestigious documentary award for independent filmmakers when it was the Grand Jury Prize for Documentaries at the 2004 Sundance Festival.

In addition, it has appeared at, or is scheduled to play at the following festivals (all in 2004):
South By Southwest
New Directors - New Films
San Francisco Film Festival
Boston Independent Film Festival
Coachella Film Festival
Newport FIlm Festival

It won't be at Cannes this year. No substantial word has come out if they didn't make it or didn't try.

Will It Be In Regular Theaters?
It is slated to be released as a real theatrical release in October, so look for the art houses to have it around then.

TV?
It has been picked up to broadcast on the cable television station The sundance Channel, and will be showing up in October.

Howabout Foreign?
No word yet on any foreign distribution deals or appearances, but I figure it is a longshot for it NOT to happen.

OK, Then Will It Be On DVD/Video?
Slated for release on DVD in late 2004-early 2005 in the U.S. No word on video. Again, no word on any foreign release in these formats either.
