You Could Do Worse's Dandys Rule OK review

You Could Do Worse #5
Dandys Rule O.K.
by Michael F. Nameche
Autumn 1995

Purveyors of sure-footed psychedelic pop, the Dandy Warhols dont miss a single chance to entrance you with the glitz of the pop art world - Over 30 years of signature sounds from the Beatles to the Pixies are the audible baubles they parade before you. Other coordinates for reference include Ride and the Velvet Underground. (This was not a great deductive stretch; track three is "Ride," while track six is a reverent ribbing titled "Lou Weed.") The lyrics ooze with kitsch irony, and the Warhols do their best to insult both sides equally, as in the magnificent "Genius": "Don't have to be fucking brilliant to see/ I'm not as smart as i seem to be." The entire album has charm and a superb sense of flow, from the catchy "The Dandy Warhols T.V. Theme Song," all the way to the final 20-minute blowout, "It's a fast driving rave-up wiht the Dandy Warhol's sixteen minutes" - an Allman Brothers jam for the shoegazer set. "Go on, drink a beer and smile, you can handle it."
