Willamette Week's Dandys Rule OK review

Dandys Rule O.K.

Courtney Taylor has a band, and like a boy with a new toy, he is long on enthusiasm and short on discipline. Dandys Rule OK, the debut recording from the local quartet led by Taylor, is awash in psychedelic knob-tweaking, hooks, vibe and spirit - so much so that you might not notice the paucity of content. But then what is pop art if not light, disposable and easily digested? Pop enough to open for Oasis a few months back, the Warhols are essentially a groove band that takes "nothing" riffs and builds them into soaring cathedrals of sound. Variation is achieved by the addition and subtraction of layers and the alteration of special effects - echo, wah-wah slide guitar, flute, backwards guitar, etc. At 16 minutes, "Fast Drivin' Rave Up" is a minute longer than the original Warhol's 15 minutes of fame. The band is best experienced live, where its hypnotic repetitions take on a life of their own, building to sizable climaxes.
