Dandys Rule O.K.

Any American band worth its rock 'n' roll salt secretly years to be British. There's just something about those dour, demented and painfully fashinable Brits that is so alien to America's gravity and lack of subtlety that we can't help but be held in their dapper sway. Thankfully Portland's own dandy Warhols have the nerve to revel in the stylish exccess excessive stylishness that rock'n'roll is supposed to be. Although the band's debut Dandys Rule OK boasts a slew of driving rockers that any Northwest band would be proud to call its own, what really sets the Dandys apart from their American brethren is their coy balance of melodic pomp and atmospheric delicacy. While the Dandy's rampant anglophilia might not inspire angry throngs to fill the Willamette with barrels of tea, the band's refreshing elan is a wonderful antidote to a decidedly unsexy scene mired in flanne, distortion and monosyllabic band names.
