Godless (Massive Attack Remix)
by Dorian Lynskey
June 2001
Massive Attack remixes help out underrated Philly psych-poppers.
It's quite likely that Dandy Warhols' footnote in musical history will consist of one catchy line ("heroin is so passé" from Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth) and their keyboardist's penchant for taking her top off. That would be a shame, because this single from their widely neglected Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia album is a marvellous concoction of parping trumpets, blasted vocals and headtrip guitar swirls, like a sequel to the Boo Radleys' Lazarus, or My Bloody Valentine gone Britpop. As an additional temptation, Massive Attack's 3D and engineer Neil Davidge provide remixes in two flavours: savagely concise, heavy-riffing post-punk and the kind of red-eyed, afterhours dub that defined Mezzanine. It's a mark of how good this record is that you can listen to all four versions in a row (there's a Massive Attack instrumental too) and still not tire of it.
