Dandys Rule, O.K.

When Dandy Warhols signed to a major label sometime last year, so the story goes, they didn't buy themselves better equipment, they just found themselves a better dealer. If it's true, then this debut album, which originally came out independently in 1996 when they were penniless, is what the Portland quartet sound like on bad drugs. Like waiting on a platform at Drone Central, much of this record - especially the three-song opus It's A Fast-Driving Rave-Up With The Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes - resembles an anal Spiritualized, while (Tony, This Song Is Called) Lou Weed is mildly funny, but as mad as bats. The presumed moral? You get what you pay for.
