Die Dandy Warhols gehören zu den Bands, die ihre Lebensphilosophie konsequent in ihrer Musik umsetzen und ausdrücken. Allerdings propagieren sie ihren bohemistischen "way of life" dermaßen übertrieben, daß es mit der Zeit ein bißchen lächerlich wirkt. Sie geben einfach zu gerne die extravaganten Künstler, die sich mit schönen Frauen, tonnenweise Drogen und philosophischen/spiritualistischen Gedankengängen umgeben. Schon die Songtitel wie "Mohammed", "Nietzsche" oder "Bohemian like you" lassen erahnen, was sich in der knappen Stunde musikalisch und lyrisch auf dem neuen Longplayer abspielen wird. Und genauso ist es auch. Das Quartett aus Portland/USA ergeht sich in psychedelischen Songepen, die nur selten unter der 5-Minuten Grenze bleiben. Die Tracks gehen ohne Pause ineinander über und wirken wie ein einziger Gitarrensog, der sich rauschgleich durch Gehör und Gehirn zieht. Dazu schwirren und flirren die Melodien und Backing Vocals wie Engel durch die Sphären und Frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor singt nicht nur so entrückt, als hätte es Van Morrison nie gegeben, sondern tut auch sonst alles, um sich zum musikalischen "Andy Warhol des neuen Jahrtausends" aufzuschwingen. Zum Höhepunkt kommt es dann im sehr schönen "Sleep", das mit meditativen Aaah- und Oooh-Chören endet. Ladies and Gentlemen, we're floating in space.
Aber das ist noch nicht alles. Zwischendurch wird immer wieder amerikanische Pop-Geschichte zitiert, mit einem reinrassigen Country-Song beispielsweise, der sinnigerweise "Country leaver" heißt, oder "Shakin'", einem Rock'n'Roll-Stück in bester Iggy-Pop-Tradition. Ansonsten geben sich bei der musikalischen Darbietung Licht und Schatten die Klinke in die Hand. Gelegentlich schaffen es die "Dandy Warhols" wirklich, ihrer bohemistischen Philosophie auch musikalisch gerecht zu werden (lies: so cool zu klingen, wie es ihrem Image nach sein soll). Das klappt hervorragend bei Tracks wie "Get off" (übrigens auch erste Single) oder "Cool scene", die das Quartett mit einer Lässigkeit aus dem Ärmeln schütteln, bei der selbst einem ausgemachten "King of Coolness" wie Noel Gallagher oder Richard Ashcroft die Spucke wegbleiben würde. Andererseits gewinnt bei vielen Stücken auch schnell die Langeweile Oberhand, zumal eingängige Refrains eine Ausnahme bleiben. Immerhin nähert sich zumindest der zweite Teil der Platte mit deutlich griffigeren Songs dem "Classic Rock"-Anspruch, den die Band mit dem neuen Album erfüllen wollte.
Das aktuelle Werk kann durchaus als Reifeprüfung für das Quartett angesehen werden. Nach dem letzten Album "Dandy Warhols come down", das mit "Not if you were the last junkie on earth" sogar einen Top-40-Hit in den UK-Charts hatte, stehen die Zeichen auf Sturm und die Band zwischen Stardom und Underground. Kein Wunder, daß die Dandy Warhols erstmals versuchen, über ihren musikalischen Horizont hinaus zu wachsen. So spendieren sie ihren Songs neuerdings auch mal Bläser und Streicher, was zwar für mehr Abwechslung sorgt, die Platte aber letztlich auch nur knapp über das Mittelmaß rettet. Das ist deshalb schade, weil Courtney Taylor-Taylor & co. zweifelsohne gute Musiker und fähige Songwriter sind. Mit mehr geradlinigen Kompositionen und weniger psychedelischen Arrangements wäre dieses Album vielleicht ein Hit und für die Band das Sprungbrett auf den Weg nach oben gewesen. Aber wahrscheinlich wollen das die Musikers sowieso nicht. Denn dann hätten sie wohl ernsthafte Credibility-Probleme und Image ist ja schließlich alles, was zählt. Zumindest im Falle der Dandy Warhols.

The Dandy Warhols belongs to volume, which converts and expresses its philosophy consistently in their music. However they publicise their bohemistischen "way OF life" so exaggerated that it works with the time a little ridiculously. They give simply to gladly the extravaganten artists, who surround themselves with beautiful Mrs., tonnenweise drugs and philosophical/mirror-image-ritualistic trains of thought. Already the Songtitel like "Mohammed", "Nietz" or "Bohemian like you" lets suspect, what will take place in music and lyrically in the scarce hour on the new Longplayer. And exactly the same is it also. The quartet from the haven land/cUsa is issued itself in psychedelischen Songepen, which remain only rare under the 5-Minuten border. The TRACKS turn into without break into one another and to work like only one guitar suction, which pulls itself by hearing and brain. In addition and flirren the melodies and Backing Vocals schwirren such as angels by the spheres and Frontman Courtney Taylor Taylor sing not only so entrueckt, as it Van Morrison never would have given, but do also otherwise everything, in order to the musical "Andy be-get themselves the new millenium" to up-swing. But that is not yet everything. Occasionally American Pop history is quoted again and again, with a reinrassigen Country Song for example, which is called sinnigerweise "Country more leaver", or "Shakin '", a Rock'n'Roll piece in best Iggy Pop tradition. Otherwise light and shade give themselves the handle to the hand with the musical presentation. Occasionally the "Dandy Warhols" really creates it, their bohemistischen philosophy to become also in music fair (read: thus cool to sound, like it after its image be is). That folds outstanding with TRACKS like "GET off" (by the way also first single) or "Cool scene", which vibrates the quartet with a casualness from that to sleeves, with which even a constituted "King OF Coolness" like Noel Gallagher or Richard Ashcroft spit would away-remain. On the other hand also fast the boredom upper hand wins with many pieces, particularly since in-usual Refrains remains an exception. At least the second part of the plate with clearly griffigeren Songs nevertheless approaches the "Classic Rock" requirement, which the volume with the new album wanted to fulfill.
The current work can be quite regarded as maturity examination for the quartet. After the last album "Dandy Warhols come down", which with "emergency if you were the read junkie on earth" even a Top-40-Hit in the UK Charts had, stand the indications on storm and the volume between star cathedral and Underground. No miracle that the Dandy Warhols tries for the first time to grow beyond its musical horizon. Thus they spendieren their Songs recently also times blaeser and Streicher, which provides for more alternation, the plate however in the long run also only scarcely over the average save. That is unfortunate, because Courtney Taylor Taylor & CO are without a doubt good musicians and capable Songwriter. With more straight-line compositions and less psychedelischen arrangements this album would have been perhaps a hit upward and for the volume the jump board on the way. But probably do not want that musician anyway. Because then they would have probably serious Credibility problems and image are finally everything that counts. At least in the case of the Dandy Warhols.
