Dandys Rule O.K.
by Jason Cherkis
November/December 1995

Trippin' through clouds in the Partridge Family bus: It's Portland's equivalent of the Posies, playing up their la-la harmonies over the skronk and screams of their hometown's idie elite. But the Dandy Warhols do it all with a wink. For every mod nod - check the hilariuos "Lou Weed" and the tribute (?) to "Ride" - they pop open the kitsch quotient with "The Dandy Warhols T.V. Theme Song." And just so you know they think the're the kings of pop panache, the band's name is featured in four song titles. But by the fifth track, Danny Bonaduce would be searching through the seat cushions for some speed - it's a droner. The album succeeds if you stick to the fun-for-fun's-sake songs, such as "Lou Weed" (Complete with Reed-esque vocals - you'd swear he guested on this one), the chugging "T.V. Theme Song," the sitar-ribbed "The Coffee and Tea Wrecks" and the rough-and-tumbler "Grunge Betty." By the end of their 16-minute closer, it's clear that someone should pare down Warhol's crack about 15 minutes of fame to about three minutes. When these Warhols make quickie pop songs they succeed, but anything other than that is jsut plain hogging the spotlight.
