Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia

Deeply rooted in seventies rock, The Dandy Warhols, renown for their live performances where keyboard and bass player Zia McCabe takes off her clothing, seem to be American siblings of Kula Shaker. A little more rock 'n roll and a hell of a lot more sarcasm seem to major differences in these bands that seem to idolise the "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals and can pigeonhole their fanbase into alternative college rock.

After listening to their third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, opening track "Godless" is the only one I care to remember - and I do through the mish-mash of their sleeve-worn influences and the lovely trumpet. There are numerous Jesus and Mary Chain references and I would swear that "Nietzche" was a Stone Roses song from 1989. There's a bit of country thrown in in "Country Leaver," unfortunately it's not the good stuff. It's more of a pastiche of bluegrass, coming off like a cowboy and indian television theme song without any hooks.

The attempt at gospel in "The Gospel" is embarrassing with singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor's voice lacking the power and beauty to bring home the message.

All in all, the word dull comes to mind, however enjoyment is possible if you like driving along in your car with the stereo blasting college radio, or perhaps if you're in the mood to catch a gig on an otherwise lonely night.
