Odditorium Or Warlords Of Mars Review From Attitude

The party is over. The Dandy Warhols' fith album finds the Portand foursome on a comedown. And boy, it doesn't half go on a bit. It's a major drawback: while the Dandies bash back to their drone-rock roots, the listener finds themselves filing their nails while the band gets to the hook. The synthesized 80s vibe to 2003's Welcome To The Monkeyhouse (predating all the current Duran Duran pastiches) is retracted in favour of country jammin' and psyched-out experimentalism. The sentiment of All THe Money Or The Simple Life Honey is of a band disillusioned; "When they tell you they love you, they love you like a one night stand" drawls Courtney Taylor. It is quintissential Dandy Warhols; arch, knowing and ironically catchy enough to get included on Paris and Nicole's next shallow jaunt across Hicksville USA. When lead single Smoke It finally airs 10 tracks in, you can almost hear the record execs light up themselves in relief at having a single on their hands. It is vintage stuff too; anthemic, country chic that acts dumb while playing cool. You just get the impression the band, having lived the advetising jingle dream, don't want to go there no more.
